RESULT: Liverpool 4-1 Luton
Full Time: Liverpool 4-1 Luton
Liverpool came from behind for the umpteenth time this season in spectacular fashion.. Trailing by a goal down at half time the fuse was lit and Luton were simply blown out the water. Goals from Virg, Gakpo, Diaz & Elliott extended The Reds lead at the top of the league.. With a Cup Final on the horizon it’s all good..
First Half
It was a bit of a first half to forget for The Reds. After a quick start where we should have been 2-0 up after Diaz broke through twice and should have scored. Luton hit us with a sucker punch.
Diaz latched on to a Kelleher through ball and the ball got stuck under his feet with no one close to him. He soon got snuffed out and that chance had gone. Minutes later he curled a left footed shot wide with the keeper rooted to the spot.
Luton made a simple one-two pass and broke free in to the box and shot low at Kellehers feet. The ball bouncing up and finding the Luton winger to head home at the far post.
The rest of the half we played well.. It was just a bit more composure in the final third that was required. I suppose with the amount of changes due to injuries that is to be expected. A few changes were needed at half time and a bit of a rocket up the strikers backsides by Jurgen..
Second Half
Whatever was said at half time certainly had the desired effect as Liverpool flew out the traps in a performance we were used to seeing week in week out in the 80's and 90's. Luton were battered by a serious onslaught, and the goals were swiftly racking up.
Virg levelled things from a Mac Allister corner. Swooping in to fire a header into the left corner. Then the same player Mac Allister assisted again firing a ball into the box for Cody Gakpo to head home instinctively high in to the roof of the net.
It was all Liverpool firing chance after chance at the Luton goal. When Robbo was subbed on for the impressive once again Conor Bradley he soon linked up with Diaz for the third.. The Colombian dummying the defender before finishing sweetly to the keepers right..
The next subs came in the shape of Clark, Danns & McConell and they looked like they'd been playing for years.. When Danns snapped into a tackle and broke up play Firmino style the ball fell to Elliott who bent one into the top left hand corner to make it 4-1
Summary
Lets never underestimate the strength of this squad and the character.. We are seriously down to the bear bones and seriously playing better than we have for some time. The back ups are stepping up and the youngsters are grabbing their chances by the scruff of the neck and playing out of their skins..
Plus credit where it's due to a Luton side who came and had a real go which other newly promoted sides should do. Their keeper Kaminski gets a special shout out also who kept the scoreline somewhat respectable. Pulling off some great saves.
Liverpool will go into the League Cup Final on a high with a good chance to get our first piece of silverware this season.. Well done lads..
