RESULT // Ipswich 0-2 Liverpool
FIRST HALF
With all the excitement of the new season you forget just how poor referees are in this league.. The Premier League should clamp down on this cos what should be the best league in the world. Is run by amateurs who make the game painful to watch at times..
The Reds set their stall out early. A lot more chilled in their play with a defensive mindset. Looking to win the ball back by pressing their opponent. Which is pretty pointless when you win it fairly and the ref blows his whistle for minimal if any contact.
The first 20 was vital to not give anything away in what was a tricky away game. With Ipswich fired up to impress their fans on the opening day. The atmosphere was good at Portman Road and they had the better chances in the opening exchanges. With Ali pulling off some fairly basic saves.
The hosts were lucky not to be down to 10 men after one of their players already on a yellow blatantly dragged the ball back on the floor.. No VAR surprise surprise.. and this was probably the story of our half. Whenever we broke free in what could be a dangerous attack we were dragged back by that whistle.
0-0 at half time was not a bad scoreline and keeping that clean sheet at this stage was vital. Arne had to fire them up for the second half cos the passes were a bit sloppy at times and very slow.. A bit more pace in the play and better quality all round..
SECOND HALF
Arne defo fired them up cos around the hour mark we exploded into life with some seriously impressive football. Team football that was at times frightening. Carving Ipswich open with ease time and time again.. The opening goal of the new era wasn't far away.
After some impressive play at the back Trent burst clear and slid a lovely through ball to Mo Salah who raced clear and squared to Jota who passed the ball high into the left hand corner of the net. With that goal on the score sheet everything opened up and the second wasn't too far behind..
Mo Salah claimed it to get that first game of the season goal he has made a trademark. Mo has looked sharp all pre season and this system seems to really suit him. He was involved in everything and when Szoboszlai found himself free in the box he slipped Mo in easily who curled a passed finish under the keeper into the far left hand corner.
Chances were coming from all angles now and it should have been 6 or 7 but we couldn't get that third.
SUMMARY
If this is a sign of things to come then the future under Arne Slot is looking very bright. A very composed team performance from the start in what could have been a banana skin as Ipswich started bright. We grew into the game and came flying out the traps in the second half.
Sure this is still very early days but the football at times was top quality. With top quality players.. Always good to get that first win early and that is safely in the bank with Brentford up next..
