Liverpool 3 - 3 Benfica

Last night them mighty reds qualified for yet another European Cup Semi Final with a draw at home to Benfica the Portuguese heavyweights. In a season where we will have been in three (3!) Semi Finals I am assured by OurJan that this is yet another record broken by our formidable team.

The Match

If anyone under estimated Benfica then they should have read our Benfica Uncovered post as pretty much everything we discussed with Johan rang true. They were sloppy at the back but pretty lethal going forwards. Scoring three and having a couple ruled out for offside they proved to be a very entertaining to watch.

In reality though this was never really a struggle for us as we opened the scoring in the 21st minute through Konate. Scoring a near exact replica of his goal at their place. In most of our minds the tie was over. They equalised on the night through Ramos. Bobby bagged a wonderful brace with two close range finishes. One from a Jota cross and the other Tsimikas chipped in with his second assist of the night. Two late goals from Yaremchuk & the very impressive Nunez made the night a little more interesting for them. Yet as we have discussed many times this season we could have scored more and pretty much strolled through this tie.

If we do ever stop trying to play the offside trap then they may not have scored at all.. VAR earned their money last night as every goal they scored or had ruled out went to be reviewed. All decisions were correct to. so credit where its due. It sure makes a change.

Villarreal are next up as we march on to that semi final. Who should prove a proper test as they knocked out Bayern Munich in the quarters. With Real Madrid facing off with City in the other tie it will be some night in Paris should we get there.. Lets hope it will be 3 Finals appearances too I'm pretty sure we've done that one before though..
